Thoughts on Rive

I set aside an enormous amount of time to watch through the Rive tutorials on YouTube while making details notes. But after a few tutorials, it began to dawn on me: As someone who has used a variety of industry tools already, this is super intuitive.

I found myself pausing tutorials after about 60 seconds and jumping into Rive to see if I could figure it out myself. I needed the odd bit of help to find a control or figure out unexpected behaviour, but on the whole they’ve done a great job building an app that makes any motion designer feel at home.

The area I expected to find the most challenge was when it came to interactivity. 20 years ago I had tried experimenting with ActionScript in Flash MX. I never really got the hang of it.

The State Machine, Inputs and Listeners in Rive are significantly easier to learn. If you try Rive and find their drawing and animation tools easy, you’ll soon pick up the interactive side of things, too.

You can view examples of my work in Rive here.
