6 Months of Freelancing
I was recently asked by Anthony Green, director of Motion Manor, how I had been finding freelancing.
My honest answer was that I've enjoyed it immensely. Freelancing full time always felt like a huge risk; I never would have jumped into it voluntarily. But having been made redundant (aka “pushed” into freelancing!) I’m getting used to how you manage the risk and uncertainty.
I know I am capable at every phase of production (from concepting, storyboarding and design to editing and animation), I genuinely enjoy putting together proposals and project budgets.
The challenge, as it is for everyone, is marketing. But even there things have been much more enjoyable than I expected. As a freelance motion designer my marketing strategy is basically this: Have conversations with people.
So far, it seems to be working. As long as the work continues to come, I will continue freelancing; I love the work, the flexibility and the variety.
